An Góilín

The organisers of the Frank Harte Festival, An Góilín Traditional Singers have been a cornerstone of Dublin’s traditional singing scene since its founding in 1979 by Tim Dennehy and Dónal de Barra. Created as a welcoming space for those who love to sing or simply listen to traditional songs, An Góilín has upheld a strong ethos of inclusivity, respect, and listening. With the motto “There is no standard set”—at least not for singing—they instead promote a high standard of attentive listening. While musical instruments are not banned, the emphasis remains on unaccompanied traditional singing of songs from any culture in any language.

Góilín meets most Friday nights from 8pm to 11pm at Club na Múinteoirí (The Teachers’ Club), 36 Parnell Square, Dublin. There is no membership or formal club structure—just a warm invitation to all who are interested in traditional singing in any language. Contributions of €5 help support the running of the sessions, which break for the summer. All are welcome, especially new singers, women, younger voices, and those who sing in Irish. Whether you’re an experienced performer or a curious listener, you’ll find yourself “as welcome as the flowers in May.” Tá míle fáilte romhat!
